Apple are having a really hard time in the blogosphere lately in regards to their App Store approval process and I think most of the commentary has been really unfair. I agree their application approval process is problematic but for someone who started out when WML was in ascendency and MIDP 1.0 was a pipe dream I can't help but be grateful to Apple for the changes they have brought to the mobile industry. The iPhone changed everything in terms of both mobile applications and browsing the web on mobile devices!
And let's remember that the App Store wasn't planned, it was a reaction to user demand for applications, Apple originally intended the iPhone to use the browser as it's primary runtime. Now all of a sudden all these web guys are getting irritated with Apple for being too strict with application approval. Poor babies... where were they when we were battling MIDP fragmentation and ridiculous network operator restrictions? I say give Apple a break and be thankful to them for invigorating an entire industry.

I have a blog post in my drafts section, with a very similar message. Even with a few app rejections that most people it seems feel the need to blog about, the process is still leagues ahead of where we were even 3-4 years ago with midp2 and Java Verify let alone further back!
I don't think these guys are aware of how difficult things were (are) outside of the iPhone/Android universe. Apple, even with it's strict approval process, makes it so much easier for developers to get a mobile service in front of *millions* of users.
Thanks Jason - it really puts it in perspective when you look at it like that, doesn't it?
All iPhone developers who complain should have to take one application through, Symbian Signed, Java Verify or get Motorola involved with bound dev certificates (similar in some respects to iPhone ad hoc provisioning) then see how much more scorched the grass can be!
Agree... Things are truly much easier w/ iPhone and Android.

>> you make it sounds as if we are so old! ;-) it was long time ago!
To force users to go through them, Apple, to get apps is just wrong- such control freaks. An app store should be an option. Let users decide where to get their apps. If their app store is so superior, then their users will prefer it over a developer's own site or some other place, to get apps.
@Enrique Not that old but I started in mobile before colour screens. I remember when we got our first Sony Ericsson T68i and were all so impressed with it. :)
@Tim. There are problems but I would rather have a restrictive App Store than nothing at all. Time will inevitably open things up.
