The Fountains of Paradise Redux
I love it when ideas first conceived in science fiction writing start to become reality. I first read about the space elevator concept in Arthur C. Clarke's The Fountains of Paradise. Since then I have read (or listened to) anything I have found on the subject. Here are some highlights:
Japan hopes to turn sci-fi into reality with elevator to the stars
'Space elevator' would take humans into orbit
The podcast is great. They discuss possible elevator speeds as being in the region of 200km/hour which means it will take 7.5 days to get up to geostationary orbit (altitude of 36,000 kilometres). That's a lot longer than I would have thought.
