Open Standards All the Way

Apple phone rumors and speculation seems like a full time fascination for some people but I have never really got that excited over the idea. Until now...

I am not a BREW (Qualcomm's application framework) fan. It's a closed environment that has high entry level costs and is tightly controlled by both Qualcomm and the network operators so as a small company its just not in our interests to bother. It also isn't available in the UK (yet... I hope O2 don't adopt it... please!) which means supporting BREW isn't a necessity.

So to hear that the "iPhone" is going to be a Cingular exclusive and therefore GSM only is good news for us. And leads on to my own "iPhone" speculation.

(1) Will it be an "open" device? What application framework will it support? Specifically I want to know if it will have a Java ME virtual machine.
(2) What type of mobile browser will it implement? A mini version of Safari? What types of markup languages will it support? How close will it stick to the current specifications and standards?
(3) Will it support WAP Push messages?
(4) Will it implement libraries like WTAI?
(5) Will it have a proper user agent and UAProf?

Ah, the list could go on and on. I really hope that Apple have employed a couple of mobile guru's and have tried to adopt and implement as many of the open standards and current mobile conventions as possible. The last thing this industry needs is a company as powerful as Apple causing more fragmentation.
