Area busy creating a dazzling future

The West Coast New Area in Qingdao has exceeded expectations with impressive achievements in its first two years of operations.

The new area's establishment was approved by the State Council, China's cabinet, in June 2014. Since then it has ranked third in terms of GDP among the 17 national new areas across the country, second only to Tianjin's Binhai and Shanghai's Pudong new areas.

Its annual per capita GDP has surpassed $24,000. The amount of foreign capital in the area and its total export and import volume have exceeded those for more than 15 cities in Shandong, including its capital, Jinan. Revenue generated from Qingdao's West Coast New Area's high-tech sector accounts for 40 percent of the city's total and 46 percent of the area's GDP.

More than 700 new projects were set up in the area with 27 preferential policies released.

Since 2014, six major construction projects have been completed, including Qingdao Iron, Ecombine Advanced Materials, the German Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion Platform, the German Center and Siempelkamp (Qingdao) Machinery Manufacturing.

In the cultural industry, the Qingdao International Beer Festival in Huangdao in August will be positioned as a "smart beer festival" featuring internationalization, smart operation, market orientation and popularization.

Construction of a mega urban complex is underway and will open in 2017. Total investment for the Expo City project will hit 50 billion yuan ($7.5 billion).

The new area is also home to two gigantic deep water port terminals, Qianwan and Dongjiakou. Managed by Qingdao Port, they have established trade relations with more than 700 ports in 180 countries and regions. Last year their cargo throughput reached 490 million tons and container throughput reached 17.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), ranking eighth and seventh among global ports. The 400,000-ton Dongjiakou Terminal is the world's largest ore terminal.

The new area has also developed China's first e-commerce platform for an automobile import port, and its first large business-to-business cross-border e-commerce platform.

Wanda Group announced a plan more than two years ago to build the 50 billion yuan Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis, a film studio in Huangdao, and it is now working with Legendary Pictures on the first film to be shot there. Starring Matt Damon, The Great Wall, a $200 million 3-D film, is expected to be released by the end of the year.

The new area covers a land area of 2,096 square kilometers, a sea area of 5,000 sq km and has 282 km of coastline. The area's administrative committee manages the affairs of 1,221 villages with a total population of 1.8 million.

High-tech sectors are also thriving in the new area. HEU Ship Tech's Qingdao plant is operating and an ultra high-speed trimaran will be featured in its product line. The Robot Industrial Park has already attracted more than 60 robot-related projects and will be the largest robot manufacturing base in North China.
